(Cucumis metuliferus) 120 days.
Want to grow something your friends have never seen before? (Or you have never seen before, haha) My sister saw these in Kenya and I'm growing them for her as a surprise. It was hard to find these seeds; However I did find some that are an heirloom variety originating from the Kalahari desert in Africa.
Kiwano melons have a spiky yellow 6-9" exterior with a greenish gel inside that has a tart citrus/pomegranate flavor mixed with melon, cucumber and banana flavors! They are supposedly very healthy containing antioxidants, vitamins A, B, C and calcium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. The seeds are eaten along with the jelly flesh. The texture has been compared to eating Jello.
Kiwano is in the cucumber/melon family and should be grown and cared for the same way. The vines are good at climbing and can be grown on a trellis or cage.
